EXCERPT:
“I know.” He cuddled her close to him once more. She allowed him to pull her close, even though her body remained rigid. “It’s a gift I treasure.”
“Then what do you need from me?” she asked, her voice soft.
He considered for a moment before speaking. “To listen. To consider that once this is over, we continue a personal relationship.”
“I see.”
Silence descended, and he waited for her to speak. Long moments passed.
“There’s just one problem.” Her voice sounded sad when she spoke.
He combed back some of her hair, and placed a kiss to the top of her head. “And what’s that?”
“You’ve rescued me. I don’t want a white knight. I never have. I’ve prided myself on being able to take care of myself. How do I ever accept that you swept in and saved me when I couldn’t save myself?” Sobs began to wrack her body again.
Perplexed, Saul held her close, allowing her to cry again. They certainly held differing perspectives on the current situation. While he viewed her with an inner strength he’d seen in few people, she saw herself as weak because she’d gotten in trouble and hadn’t known how to ask for help. While there were many things he could give to her, she had to figure this one out on her own.
When her sobs subsided, he held her away from him, thumbs brushing away her tears. He opened his mouth to speak, but she cut him off. “No,” she sobbed. “You need to understand. I have been drawn to you since the night we met. I didn’t want to be. Yes, it’s part me being stubborn, but it’s also a matter of me knowing I can take care of myself. Da Silva wanted to hurt me, I ran away because I didn’t know who to turn to or what to do. Then you showed up and rescued me. How will I ever feel safe on my own again?” He tried to speak again, but she interrupted him, continuing to rant. “I care for you, Saul. I have trusted you to be my Sir under the circumstances. What if something happens to you at work? What if you have to go away? I don’t like being vulnerable like this. I don’t want to lo—” She stopped short at her own revelation, and struggled to get away from him.
“You don’t want to feel love because you’re afraid it’s not real.”
Fear shone in her eyes. “What if it’s not?”
He held her firm, and stared directly into her eyes. “Maybe it’s a matter of your perspective.”
“What are you talking about?” Desperation tinged her voice.
“You fled because you didn’t know who to turn to, or who to trust, but that’s not true. You trusted your parents and went to them. When I arrived, you chose to trust me. You didn’t expect me to save you. You made a choice, Denise.” He observed her swallow hard as she allowed his words to sink in. He continued, “You chose to ask me to fulfill your needs. You chose to talk to me about everything. Some of the circumstances happened without your consent, but you have made your own choices on what to do about it. Not everything has been out of your control. Loving me isn’t—it’s a choice.”
One corner of her mouth twitched up in a sad, half-smile. “Love doesn’t always feel like a choice. It kind of hits you right in the heart when you least expect it.”
His smile widened. “True. I’ll give you that.” He caressed her cheeks with his thumbs. “But it is a choice on what we want to do with the love we feel for someone.”
She closed her eyes, her voice barely audible when she spoke. “I really don’t want to run away.”
“Me either.”
Opening her eyes, she studied his features, her fingers playing with his goatee again. “So, what do we do?”
He drew in a fortifying breath. There’d be no guarantee it would work, but like anything in life, certain risks were worth taking. “I have an idea, but I can’t guarantee you’ll like it.”
Her jaw set in determination. “Let’s hear it.”

Book 5 in the Star Crosses series – SUMMER HEAT!

Summer_Heat_200_300

On the heels of one battle, Kayla and Kaleb race to aid their new friend Peggy Periwinkle. They discover her shop in shambles, and Kaleb senses at the heart of the attack a presence he hasn’t felt in a long time—a childhood friend who had disappeared when he was young. The news sends him reeling, and he disappears on Kayla to process what he’s learned.
Worried Kaleb has gone on a renegade mission, Kayla seeks comfort and answers with her new friend Peggy. Together they devise a plan to find Kaleb and the man responsible for the destruction to her shop.

New friendships forged, old connections strengthened, and the past gets cleared in their Hearts. As Shadow brings the heat to their summer, Kayla and Kaleb fight back with the only weapon strong enough to defeat the darkness—Love.

EXCERPT:

Kaleb stood in the middle of Kayla’s back lawn, fists clenched at his side, body rigid, seething with rage. Growling, his gaze zeroed in on Ahren who crouched inside an energetic cage. The makeshift prison had Kayla’s signature all over it.

Pride surged up inside him at her handiwork. Love slithered in between the anger like sunrays through cloud cover. He grimaced in pain as his Light fought off the darkness. Shuddering, he refocused on Ahren, rage once more burning bright.

Snarling, Ahren crawled on the ground like a caged beast. Kaleb answered in kind, then pointed a finger at his brother. “We settle this now!”

Ahren swiped out a hand, fingertips grazing his prison of Light. A crackling sound filled the air around them. “Tell them to let me out and it will be my pleasure!”

“Do it!” Kaleb roared, addressing the guardians who had now come to stand as a barrier between him and Ahren.

Murmured discussion travelled round the group, further agitating the two men itching to fight. Through the red haze of his anger, Kaleb caught snippets of their conversation.

“We need to keep them apart until they’re fully healed,” Dawn said.

“I agree,” Marabel concurred.

“We’ll make sure they don’t hurt each other,” Trey put in, smoothing back his blonde hair.

“And one of you get Kayla,” Henry said. “Perhaps she can get him to see reason.”

“No!” Kayla’s shout caused everyone to turn in her direction. With slow, deliberate steps she walked down the porch stairs and onto the lawn. Ahren’s prison disappeared with a wave of her hand.

Ahren jumped to his feet with a howl of triumph. Kaleb noted the wild gleam in his eyes, and conjured a fireball to hurl at his friend. He wouldn’t allow the other man to escape until they’d settled their score. Years ago, Kaleb had felt abandoned by his friends, and anger at the Universe for the unfairness of his lot in life bubbled up from the bottom of his heart. Since that moment, he’d sought to protect those he cared about so they wouldn’t have reason to leave. A desperate move on his part, and it was time to unleash his fury.

Kaleb’s attention was diverted from the inner workings of his Egoic mind when Ahren rounded on Kayla. “You’re an idiot,” Ahren spat in her direction. “You think I’ll stick around now that I’m free?”

Once more, anger overrode Kaleb’s consciousness. Protect her at all costs. He wouldn’t allow Ahren to hurt anyone else, especially Kayla. He raised his arm with the intention to release the fireball directly at his old friend.

Without batting an eye, or looking in his direction, Kayla raised a hand and brought her fingers together in a closing motion, distinguishing Kaleb’s fireball. He blinked in surpriseattempting to conjure more in the palms of his hands, but he couldn’t do it. Mumbled chanting reached his ears, and he glanced over to the porch where Peggy stood as if in a trance. Somehow she’d blocked his powers with her magic.

With her attention still on Ahren, Kayla addressed him, her voice calm, cool, and collected. “Calling me an idiot is passing judgment.”

Ahren snarled in response, and advanced on her. Waving her hand, she threw up a wall of energy between them. The force of it struck Ahren, and he crumpled to his knees. Panting, he glanced up at her, expression wary.

Kaleb watched as she crouched down in front of him, and said, “All four of you—go. Margaret and I have this.”

Cautious agreement travelled round the group of guardians, but nevertheless, they stepped aside, and walked together toward the back porch.

“Now,” Kayla went on, speaking to Ahren again. “We will do this my way.”

“The hell we will,” Ahren growled.

Blurb
A quarterback facing the end of his career must come to peace with his past, and accept his present, before he can move on with his future.
Mitch Ryland accomplished what his father said he never would—he made something of himself.
When his wife suggests she’d like to start a family, Mitch is thrown for a loop. He’s never told her about his life before he ended up with his foster parents or his plans never to become a father. So when he’s taken out of the game, his failings from the past come back to haunt him, and Mitch blames his injury on his loss of focus. He’s unprepared for his career as a professional quarterback to be over. Nor is he ready to tell his wife about why football is so important to him. He’d rather put emotional and physical distance between them and focus on getting back in the game.
Serena Ryland has dreamed of becoming a mother. But when she mentions the idea to her husband, he freezes her out and she has no idea why. She’s worried that if they don’t start talking soon, she’ll lose him forever. When he refuses to come home to mend from an injury, she takes matters into her own hands, determined to spend more time with him, hoping to reignite the romance in their relationship. But she’s unprepared for the things she learns on this trip. Her husband has been carrying a few secrets that just might change the outlook of their future.
Reader Advisory: This book contains oral sex in a public environment and light bondage.
Publisher’s note: This book is part of a series but can be read as a standalone title.

Short Excerpt
Mitch sighed and shifted in his chair. The knee he could handle. Bruised and sore, he’d limp for a few days, but it was his shoulder he worried about most. This was the third time he’d dislocated it. The first official time the team doctor knew about. His fingers itched to massage the joint, but he didn’t dare. No way in hell would he show any sign of weakness. The one thing his father and grandfather had drilled into him from a young age. A lesson he’d learned well.
“It’s more than just a simple sprain or a bad bruise, Mitch, and you know it. This is potentially career ending, especially if you don’t do as I’ve instructed. You need to rest it. Whatever you’ve been doing to keep this from us isn’t helping. Today’s proof of that. And it’s not going to get better until you do something about it. And you can’t do something about it until you’re not on the field every day.”
Noah took a deep breath, his expression full of compassion. “Apply ice to reduce the swelling three times a day for fifteen to twenty minutes. That shoulder needs to be kept stable. We need the swelling to go down so we can take a good look at it. I want you to wear an arm sling for the next three weeks.
“I’ve scheduled an appointment for you three days from now then we’ll have a better idea what we’re dealing with. You’ll probably need to go through some therapy regardless of whether you end up heading down the surgery path or not. With some rest, maybe some therapy, and a light training regiment, we’ll see if there’s been any change.”
Panic swept through Mitch. He clenched his hands into fists on his thighs. “And if it doesn’t get better?”
“We’ll discuss that when the time comes.”
Mitch, well aware of the consequences, filled in the blanks. Surgery. Rehab. Months off the field. If he ended this season on the injury reserve list for next season, he’d miss training camp and wouldn’t be allowed to practice or play until the doctor cleared him. And if he did practice and aggravated the injury, or possibly made it worse, he’d be out for the rest of that season. Or longer.
On top of that, he’d have to deal with his standings. Out of play meant his rating would be affected and his stats would tank—and not only his. The team would take a hit as well. He’d disappoint the fans. He’d disappoint his friends and family.
He might never be the same afterward.
He’d end up a nobody. Just like he’d been told.
His football career may already be at the top of the spiral, just waiting for that push to send him off the edge and into the vortex. He’d always compared his life to a house of cards. Painstaking to build, easy to destroy. The king sits perched at the top, but then one slip, one tiny tug or poke on one of those cards and the whole thing would come tumbling down.
A tremor now rocked the house beneath his feet.

Short Excerpt

“Let’s walk. We can head over the park. If we see a bench and feel like it, we can sit.”

“Sounds good.” Jamie spun around, and she followed just a step behind him. Until they crossed the center of the square, dodging a dog chasing a ball, they didn’t say a word. Melissa sipped her coffee, closing her eyes in appreciation of the dark roast with a hint of hazelnut.

They reached the path that meandered through the park. He slowed his steps so she could catch up, and they walked side-by-side. Melissa searched for words.

“I apologize if my appearance yesterday angered you. I didn’t mean to upset you in any way.”

Jamie darted a quick look at her, his mouth curled up at the corners as he shrugged his shoulders. “You showing up there just surprised the hell out of me and I acted like a total jerk. I’m sorry about that.”

Was he apologizing for the kiss too? Because she didn’t want him to be sorry about that. It was the best kiss she’d had since…well, since the last time he’d kissed her.

“That’s OK. The last time we saw each other, I tucked tail and ran like my ass was on fire. I’m sorry.”

“So we’re both really sorry. How about we start over again?” he offered.

She smiled at him. “I’d like that.” She took a generous sip of her coffee and then a hearty breath. “Jamie. I’m…” She stopped before saying the ‘s’ word yet again. “I know you’re angry with me for the way I left back then.”

He lifted one shoulder and looked off into the distance. “It wasn’t your thing. I get that.”

“No, that’s not it all,” she rushed to say. Did he really think that? She loved what he’d done to her. “I—”

“I knew going into that night, it was a big mistake,” he interrupted.

A mistake? He thought making love to her had been a mistake?

“I tried for months to tell you that, Mel. The stuff I was interested in then…the stuff I’m into now, it isn’t for somebody like you.”

“But, Jamie, that’s—”

“I’d had too much to drink and I was so fucking hot for you that I let your pleas and your pretty face get to me.” He was hot for her. That’s good. Hopefully he still was. “I listened with my dick rather than my head. I should have driven you straight home from that party.” No. She started to shake her head but he kept going. “Maybe if I had, you wouldn’t have felt the need to invent a reason to leave.”

★★★★

EXCERPT:

“Tyler, wait.” She was breathless, and self-consciousness swept through her as he undressed her. Her body wasn’t the same since the accident. She was thinner from the horrible hospital food and being in a coma. She had scars from her surgery, and she was still tender in other spots, even though she didn’t look half as bad as when she’d first come to.

“What is it, Jenna?”

She blushed and felt a little silly all of a sudden. Since when had she ever been shy with him? The answer was never. “I’m different now,” she whispered. “With the scars, it’s probably not going to be very pretty to look at.”

He didn’t answer. Instead he continued to undress her until she stood before him completely nude. “Come with me.” He moved her in front of a long mirror and lifted her chin so she was forced to look at herself. “You’re beautiful, Jenna.”

His lips were close to her ear, and his breath was warm and soothing. It gave her a chill as she leaned into him. “I’m glad you think so.”

“You’re trim.” He continued trailing his hands from her hips up to cup her breasts. “And perky, perfect. God, Jenna, your breasts are just right the way they lay in my hands.” He tested their weight in each as he fondled them, stroking his thumbs

across her hardened peaks.

“Tyler, don’t stop.” Breathless, and weak in the knees, she leaned into his embrace while he teased and tweaked her nipples. She reached back to stroke him, but he moved to stand in front of her instead.

Starting with her feet, he gazed up her entire body with lust. Once he reached her eyes again, he said, “The scars are still healing and barely noticeable. You’ve been through hell, and you’re still so damn sexy.”

Blurb:

When it’s a fight for your life, submission is a sin.

UFC fighter, Megan Renard, is having a difficult time keeping her eye on the prize when she can’t keep her eyes off of her long-time trainer, Ryan Blake. But changing a relationship that works isn’t a sin she’s prepared to pay penance for.

Dom Ryan desires to experience Megan’s gift of submission, yet he knows taking their relationship to another level could have disastrous effects for her fighting career, not to mention their friendship. One kiss is all it takes to convince him that heaven in her arms is worth the devil’s wrath.

Determined to give her an edge in the ring before her next title fight, Ryan hires Sinclair Reed to train Megan in internal martial arts. When the FBI show up to question Sinclair on the disappearance of Megan’s opponent,  the couple get caught up in a world of underground mob clubs, and Ryan comes face to face with a Domme he’d long tried to forget. Now he fights to protect Megan not only from a lifestyle he chose to leave, but from her desire to please him at all costs.

Excerpt 1:

Inner fire burned in Megan’s heart. A result of the recent win, or a pissy attitude because Ryan had put the kibosh on her sex life for the evening? Did it matter? Her ass pulsed in reminder of when his hand had connected with her flesh back at the airport. She wouldn’t let that go unchallenged.

Shifting to rest one hip against the door of his vehicle, she crossed her arms over her chest, bunching what little cleavage she had. The action had the desired effect. His eyes raked her body so quick, if she’d have blinked, she would have missed it.

Eyes narrowed, he stalked toward her and stopped, looming over her. Ryan didn’t say a word, nor did he reach for her. Her heart thumped in her chest. They’d flirted on occasion. His compliments and affection were always genuine. And for some goddamn reason, she wanted to up the stakes, see if the physical attraction was one-sided or not.

Tipping her chin up, she kept her eyes fixed on his, stomach dancing a nervous jig. Megan hadn’t gotten to where she had in life by waiting for other people to give her what she wanted. “I really want you to kiss me.”

“I know.”

His gruff response surprised her, causing a mixed reaction in her belly. Desire burned low in her core, and one corner of her mouth kicked up in a half smile. Before she could say anything, Ryan cupped her cheeks in his hands, and brought his face down to hers. For a moment, their breath mingled. Then his lips came down hard on hers, his kiss demanding she open her mouth to accept his passion. When his tongue invaded, her head swam.

She clutched at his forearms, kissing him back with equal abandon. Ryan pressed her back into the vehicle, his hard body dominating hers; captive with no wish to be free. He pulled back to break the kiss, then pressed his lips hard against hers before putting real distance between them.

Even though he’d created a good foot of space between their bodies, he continued to cradle her face in his hands. Megan blinked to clear the fog of lust from her brain.

Ryan arched a brow. “Satisfied?”

“Uh…yeah…” She cleared her throat to give herself a moment to gather her wits. Why had he made it sound like he’d offered her a treat she’d been craving? Well, I have been craving something… She hadn’t expected it to be so decadent. “Wow…you… You are…”

He remained silent awaiting her to complete her thought.

She inhaled a steadying breath. “You sure know how to dominate a kiss.”

He chuckled. “Nice choice of words.” His thumbs massaged her cheeks for a second. “And you submitted nicely.”

Confusion crinkled her brow, and she batted his hands away from her face. “Was this some kind of test?”

“You asked for a kiss, and I gave you one.”

His matter-of-fact tone irritated her to no end. She spun away from him, and opened the door to the SUV. “This isn’t a game to me, Ry. I really care about you. I care about us. If you’re going to grant me a kiss, then I want to know where I stand.”

He sighed, and stared off into the distance. “Let’s go home.”

“Fine.” She sat in the passenger seat, and slammed the door. Hot tears pricked her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. How could he not care when that kiss meant so much to her?

Ryan got into the car, and slammed his door. They sat in silence for a few seconds before he spoke. “Meg—I care about you a lot. I don’t know if a sexual relationship between us is a good idea.”

“And yet you kissed me. And smacked me on the ass.” She turned to face him, arms crossed over her chest again. “Those aren’t our regular forms of affection. If you don’t want to take things further, then don’t toy with me.”

“I do mean them.” Still without looking directly at her, he laid a hand on her thigh. “I like to be dominant in the bedroom.”

Megan gulped in surprise. Not the response she’d been expecting. Ryan a Dom? The thought had never occurred to her. She’d read about the BDSM lifestyle, met people who lived it to different degrees. She’d even gotten kinky in the bedroom on occasion, but she’d never considered herself a submissive. In her fighting career, the word submission didn’t enter her vocabulary. To submit, in her mind, meant giving in; giving in equaled losing.

Excerpt 2:

“Tie me up?” Nervous excitement skittered through her system, amping up her arousal, and causing wet heat to gather between her thighs.

In for a penny, as they say… A slow nod accompanied her agreement. “Yes, but before you do, may I do something?”

“What would you like?”

“I’d like to touch you. Everywhere.” Eyeing his ripped torso like a medium rare steak, she licked her lips, and stepped toward him.

He gestured arms wide. “By all means…”

Tentative, wishing to savor the moment, her fingertips hovered over his pecs, sparks sizzling where she touched. She traced a pattern down his chest and abs, she knew she’d never want to touch another man again. The bumps and ridges of his muscle mixed with the sensation of a smattering of hair on the middle of his chest.

Sexual awareness heightened. Her body grew achy, hot, and goose bumps broke out on her skin. Shivering, her hands drifted over his waist, then toyed with the waist band of his pants. Ryan took the liberty of removing his track pants, revealing a bulging cock encased in navy blue boxer briefs.

Chewing her lower lip, she eyed the hidden prize.

Ryan leaned forward to nuzzle her neck, the sensation of his hot breath on her skin causing a shudder to race down her spine. “Anything else you want to touch?” The deep rumble of his voice speared her cunt with lust.

She nodded, and reached out with one hand, tracing the outline of his cock first with a fingertip, then a line along his length, under to tickle the underside of his sac, and cup his balls. Bolder now, she ran the heel of her hand back over his erection, noting how it pulsed under her touch.

“Enough.”

Fascinated with her exploration, Ryan’s gentle command made her jump. Obeying, she dropped her hands to her sides, and waited for his next move. When he slipped off his briefs, she couldn’t help but drop to her knees in front of him. She’d never wanted to suck on a man’s cock more in her life. Her hands hovered, shaking with the urge to grab his shaft and stroke it before sliding the length into her mouth.

“Oh, Megan…”

She glanced up at him to see a look of utter tenderness on his face. He ran his hand over her head, cradling the back of her skull for a second. “Everything okay?” she asked.

“Yeah, it’s just…you…on your knees… Damn.”

A grin consumed her face. He’s pleased then. Her heart thumped hard in her chest. Why did it matter to her so much that he would be pleased with their interaction? Was it because she was used to taking his instruction? Or did she fear not being the kind of lover he was used to?

Maybe because it does mean so much more to me. To both of us. By the look on his face, he didn’t mind in the least. And they meant a hell of a lot more to each other than fuck buddies.

Focusing her attention on his cock, her mouth watered, and she licked her lips. Without hesitation, she grabbed the base of his shaft, and licked a path from base to tip. Ryan groaned, then stepped back from her ministrations.

Surprised and disappointed, she blinked at him.

“Later,” he said. “For now, rest your hands palms up on the back of your thighs.”

Bewildered, she did as he said.

“Good girl. Spread your thighs a bit.”

Once again, she did as he asked, and she observed a shudder ripple his tall frame. “This is position one. Try to remember that.”

“Okay.” She nodded, then took the hand he offered.

He helped her stand, then brushed his lips across hers. “This is about you right now, remember?” he murmured.

“If you insist.” She wrapped her arms around his waist, holding him tight, kissing him back with equal passion.

Ryan backed her toward the bed, then lay her down with her head on the pillows. His hands slithered up her ribcage and arms until he held her wrists in his hands. He stared into her eyes, waiting for her to agree. When she nodded in approval, he used the scarves to tie each wrist to one of the bars on the metal headboard.

“Thank you.” His sincere gratitude, calmed the frisson of panic that rose up inside. She’d never been at another’s mercy like this. Exposed in a way she’d never been before, she trembled. Ryan smiled down at her, and placed a tender kisses to her forehead, nose and lips. “Relax,” he said. “Trust me.”

Summer Romance and the Bayou Beckons by Linda Joyce

Positive and Negative words for Summer Romance and the Bayou Beckons

By Linda Joyce Linda_Joyce_0342

What are your words for summer romance?

I’m working on a manuscript, Bayou Brides, book four of the Fleur de Lis series. I’m putting down all kinds of words, going with the flow, and loving the energy of the mood.

Writing, unlike other forms of art, must first be captured on paper/computer screen, a writer’s raw material, before it can be polished into a gem of a book. I’m mentally and emotionally hanging out in the near past in Mississippi immediately following Hurricane Katrina—I’m engrossed. My fingers fly across the keys far faster than when I played piano.

Then my cell phone dings.

The real world comes into focus.

Dictionary.com posts the word for the day—Incondite.

Darn! My concentration is now broken, so I flip over to the Dictionary site on my laptop for a short, yet educational break. After all, who would know? I’m sitting in my writing cave alone except for the snores from three canines. I can take a few minutes to engage in a worthwhile word game to improve my writing. (That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.)

Once at the website, the game appears like a pop quiz. The current challenge: Positive and negative words for summer romance. Intriguing.

(By the time you read this post, the link should still work, but the game may be different. I urge you to give it a go. I dare you.)

Hmmm….This vocab game will be a slam-dunk! Of course, I know ALL the vocabulary words for romance. What better way to take a break than to boost my writing confidence with a 100% correct score?

And so I begin. There are four possible choices for each vocabulary word. The best thing about the quiz is that it provides IMMEDIATE feedback. A bright green star and check mark appear at the top of the page and highlight the correct answer. But then, RED! I missed one! Cosset. *Sigh* I never recall cosset used in any romance novel I’ve read. So now the challenge is to find a novel containing the usage.

One of the dogs bumps my arm. I remember—I’m supposed to be writing! I’d better get back to that.

In case you’re in need of a distraction, let Bayou Beckons, my new release be the ding that takes you away. Happy Reading!

Pink and orange hues filled the sky with a warm beauty while the sun set. Holly wrapped her arms around herself and lifted her face toward the sky to soak in the last few moments of the sun before the chill of the night descended upon them. This was definitely not going to be an easy talk to get through. She just hoped they’d both be okay when it was done.  Zander stepped up behind her, and she felt the heat of his body before he wrapped his arms around her from behind. The way she was drawn to him made her wonder if he had a magnetic pull, and it kind of scared her a little bit. Holly tried to enjoy the view as they were silent for a few moments.
“As much as I hate to let go, I think maybe we should sit so we can finally talk,” Zander said.
She hesitated a moment before taking his hand while they walked back to his house and sat beside each other on the patio. This is it.
“First, I want to clear up earlier,” Zander said. “She was just a friend, nothing more. She has only ever been a friend.”He lifted their linked hands and kissed the top of hers.
“This isn’t any of my business, but does she realize that? I got the impression there was much more than a friendship there.” Holly held her breath and didn’t exhale until after he answered her.
“Not for a really long time, and we were never a couple.” His posture slumped. “Before today, I hadn’t heard from her in months. She just showed up out of the blue, but I swear nothing happened.”
“Why are you telling me this?” Holly shifted to face him. “So you and she were friends with benefits a while ago. I have to admit I didn’t like seeing you with her, but I don’t have any right to be mad. We’re taking things slow, remember?”
“That’s just the thing. I want to be with you, Hol. As in, I’d be staking my claim. You’d be my girlfriend, exclusive.”
“I’m actually kind of glad you said that. I’ve recently figured out that I’m not made for casual.” She bit her lip nervously.“I don’t even care about your friend anymore because I sort of have some huge news, which throws going slow out the window anyway. That is, if you don’t freak out and feel like you want nothing to do with me after this.”
“Okay, now you’re making me nervous,” he joked nervously and playfully nudged her with his shoulder. “What’s up?”
“You probably should be.” Holly smiled weakly and then exhaled long and hard. “I didn’t want a relationship when you came into the picture, and I didn’t want to care for someone so much. But then there you were all sweet, caring, and persistent and screwed up my original plans. So let’s get that out there.” She smiled and leaned into him. Her head lay on his shoulder and she looked up at him needing to be close. “That’s the best part by the way because I’m glad I’ve let you in. I care for you a lot. I’ve messed up,though. We both have. Do you remember the night at my sister’s?”
“How could I forget?” His eyes lit up and she snorted.
“It was a good night, huh?” She licked her lips just thinking about it. “Well, I haven’t been feeling like myself lately,so Lauren decided to take me to get a checkup…”
“O-okay, you were sick and…?” Zander’s brows scrunched together in confusion, but as if he sensed her discomfort, he gave her a quick reprieve to pull herself together before she had to spit out the big news. He captured her mouth. His soft, plump lips caressed hers, then he moved to nip and suck on her bottom lip. His tongue coaxed her mouth open farther, and she tasted his mutual arousal as he probed the slit of her mouth with his tongue. One of her hands fisted in his shirt and held him closer, while the other massaged his nape and into his hair. They both moaned in the heat of the moment, and she could feel his chest rise and fall more rapidly before he pulled away.
“God, I’ve missed this,” he said. “You get sick again and I’m coming over with some chicken soup and taking care of you.
“That sounds amazing.” She smirked. “I’ve missed you too.” Holly shifted so that she was facing him now and rested her forehead against his while they caught their breath.
“Don’t go home yet. Call Lauren and let’s recreate that night.” He wiggled his eyebrows up and down.
“You are such a goofball. As tempting as that sounds, I need to finish what I was saying before you distract me too much.”She gave him a quick peck on the lips and leaned back.
“But the distraction is so good. I can’t help myself.” He lifted a sexy, dark eyebrow in question. “Can we fool around a bit while you talk? I’m a great multitasker.”
“I’ll tell you what, if after I tell you everything I need to, you still want to fool around or more, then yes, we’ll go inside your place and I’ll make it worth your while.” She wiggled her brows back at him and smiled as she caressed the side of his face. I just hope I don’t ruin things first.
“Deal.”
“Lauren might not be too happy if she finds out the truth.”
“Really?” He looked at her in shock. “I find that hard to believe after her and Shelby practically pushed us together.” He smiled and kissed the back of her hand. “Remind me to thank them for that one day.”
“I really hope you still feel that way after you hear what I have to say.”
“Quit stalling and just tell me already.”
“So you know I haven’t been feeling well lately, but what you don’t know is why she’s been on my case. She had some concerns that drove her to take me to the doctor in the first place.” She leaned way back in her chair and closed her eyes.
“Is she still hung up about the new apartment?”
“In a way, I guess, but right now what’s bothering her is her assumption that I might be pregnant.” She peeked in his direction to gauge his reaction.
He stiffened a bit on the seat next to her and sat straighter. “Wait, what?”
