The Revenge Game

by Alice Gaines

Adam Morrow is a self-made millionaire. But one night with her could ruin everything…

I’ve worked my ass off for what I have, and I’m damn proud of it. I started off with nothing and now I’m filthy rich. Let me tell you, there’s nothing like revenge to help you get your ass in gear. And that’s what I’m taking, with every exclusive resort I open—sweet, sweet revenge…on her.

Nicole Westmore was my first love. The poor little rich girl stole my heart with her sweet smile, hot body, and irresistible innocence. The summer I worked for her father was the best time of my life…until he drove me away. Even then, I thought Nicole would wait for me. She didn’t.

And so, I decided to get even, opening rival hotels, slowly driving them out of business. The old man is gone now, but Nicole is still running the company that’s about to collapse. All my hard work will soon pay off.

And then I catch sight of her at a wedding, and all those feelings come rushing back–for both of us. Still, she doesn’t know what I’ve done—yet—and she seems more than willing. What will one night in her bed hurt?

The sex is hotter than ever, and I can’t help wondering if I’ve made a mistake. Until I get up the next morning…and realize I’ve been kidnapped!

Adam sat at the table in their cottage on the cove and watched Nicole prepare dinner. It was exactly the sort of scene he’d fantasized about when he’d been young and in love. And for once in a very long time, he faced an inner struggle.

Did he still hate her? No. Did he still hate her father? Sure, but what was the point? The man was dead, and Adam was having sex with his daughter again. That in itself would have the bastard spinning in his grave.

Did he still want to sink Westmore Hotels? Getting rid of the competition was a good business move, revenge or not.

But the most important issue involved his own emotions. If he was having honeymoon sex, would he be able to walk away when he’d had enough? Hell, would he ever have enough of this woman? Sometime soon, he’d have to return to the office. And she’d have to go back to work. They’d leave here, and then what? Could he do without her, or was he already in too deep?

He’d tried just about everything one body could do with sex, and it had all been fantastic for him and for all his partners. But none of it compared with being with this woman, even in the most ordinary of ways. Emotion—feelings—had to account for the difference. You had honeymoon sex with someone you loved. Grant hadn’t said that, but he’d implied it. Was he falling in love with Nicole all over again? Good God in heaven.

She glanced over her shoulder at him. “You look pensive.”

“I was only wondering if you’ve become domesticated,” he lied.

She laughed. “Not likely. I love to cook, but I’m happy to have someone else clean up.”

“Spoiled little rich girl.”

“There are some good things about being spoiled and rich.” She picked up a colander full of greens and a bowl and approached the table.

“Here,” she said as she put both in front of him. “How good are you at tearing up lettuce for a salad?”

“I promise you, I can tear up anything you want.”

She laughed again. She seemed to do it easily, quite in contrast with the tense woman who’d confronted him at Grant’s sister’s wedding. They were getting along now…more or less. As long as she didn’t find out about Vivian.

She went back to work near the sink, shelling shrimp for a Cajun dish. An array of spices and fresh herbs stood all around her cutting board. This promised to be quite a feast.

He had to end the honeymoon before he lost control of his emotions completely. They were competitors, and he might still end up taking over Westmore Hotels. If he did, she’d hate him, and they’d end up back at square one. No. He had to get back to New York and get some distance from her so he could clear his head and figure out where to go from here.

But first, he had a little treat in store for her, if she liked that kind of thing. He’d made a detour to the resort gift shop and had liberated a few silk scarves. Long ones. Long enough to tie wrists and ankles to the posts at the corners of their bed.

She was wearing shorts that snuggled against her butt in a particularly tempting way. They weren’t super tight, allowing movement, but they still showed off her curves. He’d cupped her buttocks with his palms as he drove himself into her, so the mere act of staring at her aroused him. She might not go for the silk, but he’d definitely have sex with her. One last indulgence before he got her to agree the time had come to return to the real world.

“Why don’t you take a break and come over here?” he said.

She turned and cocked her head, staring at the lettuce she’d put in front of him. “You haven’t touched that.”

“I don’t feel like cooking right now.”

“But dinner…”

“It can wait for a while,” he said.

She put down her knife, turned, and rested her backside against the counter. “What on earth could you possibly have in mind?”

He gave her a grin—that came more easily now, too—and he turned in his chair and patted his knee. “Why don’t you come over here and find out?”

She sauntered toward him. “You’re a sex fiend, you know?”

“I’ve been called worse.”

She sat on his knee and draped her arms around his shoulders. Being this close to her, he could get lost in the emerald gleam of her eyes. They definitely held a wicked twinkle.

“I had a really nasty thought as I watched you on the elliptical today,” he said.

“You were watching me?”

“You know I can’t take my eyes off you,” he said.

“That’s nice.” She pressed her lips against his, just long enough to give him a taste of her. “Really nice.”

With her butt on his thigh, her legs sat near his crotch. Her kisses and the scent of her perfume had already warmed his libido, and his sex thickened and hardened in anticipation of having her yet again. If she’d been a drug, he would have been addicted long before now. This was exactly why he needed some distance. But not quite yet.

“So, anyway…my wicked thought,” he said.

She moved her mouth to his ear and blew into it. “Do tell.”

He shuddered as a bolt of lightning slashed through him. Holy crap, she could turn him on. “A little exotic play, maybe. But only if it excites you.”

She straightened. “Exotic? How?”

“Trust. I’m going to prove to you that I trust you completely.” For now, they’d leave aside the question of whether she could trust him.

She leaned back and looked at him out of the corners of her eyes. “You’re not going to fall backward and trust me to catch you, are you?”

“Nothing quite that innocent,” he said. “I’m going to let you tie me up.”

She hooted. “You’re kidding, right?”

“Only if you want to. It’s your call.”

She stared into his eyes. “You’re serious.”

“There’s a bag from the hotel gift shop in the bedroom. It has enough silk scarves to tie me pretty securely to the bed.”

“I did see that bag.” She bit her lip. “Silk scarves, huh?”

“You wouldn’t hurt me, of course,” he said.

“But I could tie you up, and…”

“Do whatever you want to me.” The more he thought about this plan, the hotter he got. Imagine, her crawling all over him. Getting naked but not allowing him to touch her. He couldn’t do anything for his own pleasure unless she allowed it. If she toyed with him for a good, long while and then finally allowed him to climax, the orgasm would tear him apart. What a way to go.

“Would that really turn you on?” she asked.

“It already has. Touch me if you want proof.”

Finders Ghost Hunting #1

by Amy Romine

Genre: Paranormal Romance Thriller

When an expert Demonologist meets a Reality Show Producer on the Ghost Hunting Show Finders, sparks of true love fly so brightly even the Devil takes notice.

Demonologist, Luke Melloy has seen the face of pure evil. He’s fought it and sent it back to hell. It’s what he does. To Claire Westin, ghosts and demons are just great television and good for ratings. When faced with the truth Luke has seen, her reality is turned upside down as the two are swept into dire straits moments after they meet. Desire sparks between the unlikely pair, throwing their hearts into chaos with a love neither expected nor wanted.

When the Demon targets an unsuspecting Claire with his wrath, Luke finds his focus split between his oath to God and the awakening of his heart. Together, can they face the ancient evil and defeat it or lose everything?

Luke and Claire watched Grant, and the doctor attempt to engage Kelsey. The teenage girl sat still, her gaze fixed on Claire.

“Claire, come here,” Luke said motioning for Claire to join him on the other side of the room. “Slowly.”

Claire complied. Luke watched the girls’ eyes track Claire’s movement like a hunter tracking its prey.

“Luke,” Claire gasped, and Luke focused.

Claire’s usually clear eyes were fogged. He took her hand and discovered she was cold to the touch, as cold as when he’d pulled her out of the well.

“Just focus on me,” Luke said, squeezing her hand and knocking on the window between the rooms. A tingling sensation pulsed through Luke’s body. Consciously pushing the energy to Claire, he drank in the experience while taking deep breaths. Claire’s eyes cleared, and her hand warmed. “Better?”

She nodded. At the same moment, the door opened. Grant entered the small room, his eyes immediately focusing on their joined hands. “Is everything okay?”

“Yeah, I just got a little light-headed,” Claire said, releasing Luke’s hand.

Luke shot a look at Grant. “How did it go in there?”

“She opened her eyes, and we thought we were getting somewhere, but then we lost it. Not sure what happened.”

“We might know,” Luke said.

Claire shot him a deadly look.

Luke explained what happened in the observation room.

“Seriously?”

“Yeah.”

“There’s only one way to know for sure,” Grant said, looking at Claire.

“What?” Claire asked.

“We need to test the theory,” Luke replied.

“How?”

“By putting the stimulus back in the equation. First in the observation room, and then in the room with Kelsey,” Grant said.

“You’re not serious?” Claire replied, turning away from the men.

“Claire, if Kelsey is attracted to you for some reason, we have to investigate and see where it leads,” Grant replied.

Claire ran her hands through her hair. She stood silent for a moment before turning and meeting Luke’s eyes. She seemed to be searching for something. An acknowledgment or reassurance? He couldn’t give anything to her and looked away.

“Claire, there’s something you need to know,” Grant said.

Luke’s stomach dropped. Listening to Grant explain to Claire what had happened at the hospital when they found her in Kelsey’s room made him physically ill. He kept his focus elsewhere, not wanting to watch Claire’s reaction to the news. The incident was his fault. He should be able to protect her.

“Fine,” Claire said. “Yeah, okay, let’s see what happens.”

Luke turned, seeing the determination in her eyes.

Grant returned to Kelsey’s room and quietly informed the doctor Luke would be entering the room next, then stepped into the hallway and motioned to Luke. The two men switched places.

Luke stepped in, noting how cold the room felt compared to the hallway. “Hello, Kelsey, my name is Luke Melloy. I want to speak with you about Crestwater Church.” The girl lay motionless. “Kelsey, can you hear me? We’re here to help you, but you have to tell us what happened. We went to Crestwater. I gotta tell you, Kelsey, the church is a pretty creepy place. I would understand if you’re hesitant about sharing your experiences.” Luke took her hand. “Kelsey, you’re safe here in the hospital. Surrounded by people who are here to help you through this trauma.”

The door opened. Grant walked into the room, followed by Claire. Luke shook his head.

The doctor audibly sighed, “I want to thank you for trying. Your help is sincerely appreciated.”

“It is our pleasure,” Luke replied, watching Claire and Grant approach the bed.

Kelsey lay quietly, the shadows of her face dark and haunting despite the harsh hospital lights. Luke watched her closely while alternating his focus on Claire.

Nothing.

Silence.

Luke looked to Grant and then Claire. Claire exhaled a deep breath, the warmth of her breath mixing with a sudden iciness in the air. He switched his focus to Kelsey, whose eyes opened. The skin of her expression tightened against the bones of her face. Her eyes stared out with a menacing black glare. The room filled with the stench of death and sulfur.

“Kelsey?” Luke said. A guttural, yelping laugh of malevolent spite and rage emanated from the thin girl’s physical form. “Who are we speaking with, if not Kelsey?”

“He who is not him or her. He who will make the dripping climax of blood at your feet,” the Demon within Kelsey replied, licking its lips while looking at Claire.

An unearthly scream filled the room. Claire. Her face ashen and eyes wide in terror, she stumbled back. Grant moved to catch her, and Luke re-focused.

“God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, I appeal to your holy name, humbly begging your kindness, that you may graciously grant me help against this unclean spirit now tormenting this creature of yours, through Christ our Lord.”

“Save her, Luke. Save her as you did Daniel!” the Demon cried. The room shook, the lights flickering.

“I armor myself today with the power of the Most Holy Trinity, in the oneness of God, Creator of the universe. I armor myself today with the baptism of Christ, His crucifixion and resurrection, His ascension and glorious second coming.”

“There is no hope for her light! It is already marked with the seed of Belial!”

“I armor myself today with God’s guidance to direct me, God’s might to sustain me, God’s wisdom to instruct me, God’s word to give me speech, God’s shield to protect me, God’s army to defend me, against the snares of demons, against the lure of vices, against all who plot me harm.”

“Centum quinquaginta animas sedem formabis radicibus!” the Demon spat out with a low growl.

As quickly as the episode began, it ended. Luke checked the room. Claire stood shielded within Grant’s protective arms, while the doctor huddled in the corner of the room.

Shit.

Blurb:

When it’s a fight for your life, submission is a sin.

UFC fighter, Megan Renard, is having a difficult time keeping her eye on the prize when she can’t keep her eyes off of her long-time trainer, Ryan Blake. But changing a relationship that works isn’t a sin she’s prepared to pay penance for.

Dom Ryan desires to experience Megan’s gift of submission, yet he knows taking their relationship to another level could have disastrous effects for her fighting career, not to mention their friendship. One kiss is all it takes to convince him that heaven in her arms is worth the devil’s wrath.

Determined to give her an edge in the ring before her next title fight, Ryan hires Sinclair Reed to train Megan in internal martial arts. When the FBI show up to question Sinclair on the disappearance of Megan’s opponent,  the couple get caught up in a world of underground mob clubs, and Ryan comes face to face with a Domme he’d long tried to forget. Now he fights to protect Megan not only from a lifestyle he chose to leave, but from her desire to please him at all costs.

Excerpt 1:

Inner fire burned in Megan’s heart. A result of the recent win, or a pissy attitude because Ryan had put the kibosh on her sex life for the evening? Did it matter? Her ass pulsed in reminder of when his hand had connected with her flesh back at the airport. She wouldn’t let that go unchallenged.

Shifting to rest one hip against the door of his vehicle, she crossed her arms over her chest, bunching what little cleavage she had. The action had the desired effect. His eyes raked her body so quick, if she’d have blinked, she would have missed it.

Eyes narrowed, he stalked toward her and stopped, looming over her. Ryan didn’t say a word, nor did he reach for her. Her heart thumped in her chest. They’d flirted on occasion. His compliments and affection were always genuine. And for some goddamn reason, she wanted to up the stakes, see if the physical attraction was one-sided or not.

Tipping her chin up, she kept her eyes fixed on his, stomach dancing a nervous jig. Megan hadn’t gotten to where she had in life by waiting for other people to give her what she wanted. “I really want you to kiss me.”

“I know.”

His gruff response surprised her, causing a mixed reaction in her belly. Desire burned low in her core, and one corner of her mouth kicked up in a half smile. Before she could say anything, Ryan cupped her cheeks in his hands, and brought his face down to hers. For a moment, their breath mingled. Then his lips came down hard on hers, his kiss demanding she open her mouth to accept his passion. When his tongue invaded, her head swam.

She clutched at his forearms, kissing him back with equal abandon. Ryan pressed her back into the vehicle, his hard body dominating hers; captive with no wish to be free. He pulled back to break the kiss, then pressed his lips hard against hers before putting real distance between them.

Even though he’d created a good foot of space between their bodies, he continued to cradle her face in his hands. Megan blinked to clear the fog of lust from her brain.

Ryan arched a brow. “Satisfied?”

“Uh…yeah…” She cleared her throat to give herself a moment to gather her wits. Why had he made it sound like he’d offered her a treat she’d been craving? Well, I have been craving something… She hadn’t expected it to be so decadent. “Wow…you… You are…”

He remained silent awaiting her to complete her thought.

She inhaled a steadying breath. “You sure know how to dominate a kiss.”

He chuckled. “Nice choice of words.” His thumbs massaged her cheeks for a second. “And you submitted nicely.”

Confusion crinkled her brow, and she batted his hands away from her face. “Was this some kind of test?”

“You asked for a kiss, and I gave you one.”

His matter-of-fact tone irritated her to no end. She spun away from him, and opened the door to the SUV. “This isn’t a game to me, Ry. I really care about you. I care about us. If you’re going to grant me a kiss, then I want to know where I stand.”

He sighed, and stared off into the distance. “Let’s go home.”

“Fine.” She sat in the passenger seat, and slammed the door. Hot tears pricked her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. How could he not care when that kiss meant so much to her?

Ryan got into the car, and slammed his door. They sat in silence for a few seconds before he spoke. “Meg—I care about you a lot. I don’t know if a sexual relationship between us is a good idea.”

“And yet you kissed me. And smacked me on the ass.” She turned to face him, arms crossed over her chest again. “Those aren’t our regular forms of affection. If you don’t want to take things further, then don’t toy with me.”

“I do mean them.” Still without looking directly at her, he laid a hand on her thigh. “I like to be dominant in the bedroom.”

Megan gulped in surprise. Not the response she’d been expecting. Ryan a Dom? The thought had never occurred to her. She’d read about the BDSM lifestyle, met people who lived it to different degrees. She’d even gotten kinky in the bedroom on occasion, but she’d never considered herself a submissive. In her fighting career, the word submission didn’t enter her vocabulary. To submit, in her mind, meant giving in; giving in equaled losing.

Excerpt 2:

“Tie me up?” Nervous excitement skittered through her system, amping up her arousal, and causing wet heat to gather between her thighs.

In for a penny, as they say… A slow nod accompanied her agreement. “Yes, but before you do, may I do something?”

“What would you like?”

“I’d like to touch you. Everywhere.” Eyeing his ripped torso like a medium rare steak, she licked her lips, and stepped toward him.

He gestured arms wide. “By all means…”

Tentative, wishing to savor the moment, her fingertips hovered over his pecs, sparks sizzling where she touched. She traced a pattern down his chest and abs, she knew she’d never want to touch another man again. The bumps and ridges of his muscle mixed with the sensation of a smattering of hair on the middle of his chest.

Sexual awareness heightened. Her body grew achy, hot, and goose bumps broke out on her skin. Shivering, her hands drifted over his waist, then toyed with the waist band of his pants. Ryan took the liberty of removing his track pants, revealing a bulging cock encased in navy blue boxer briefs.

Chewing her lower lip, she eyed the hidden prize.

Ryan leaned forward to nuzzle her neck, the sensation of his hot breath on her skin causing a shudder to race down her spine. “Anything else you want to touch?” The deep rumble of his voice speared her cunt with lust.

She nodded, and reached out with one hand, tracing the outline of his cock first with a fingertip, then a line along his length, under to tickle the underside of his sac, and cup his balls. Bolder now, she ran the heel of her hand back over his erection, noting how it pulsed under her touch.

“Enough.”

Fascinated with her exploration, Ryan’s gentle command made her jump. Obeying, she dropped her hands to her sides, and waited for his next move. When he slipped off his briefs, she couldn’t help but drop to her knees in front of him. She’d never wanted to suck on a man’s cock more in her life. Her hands hovered, shaking with the urge to grab his shaft and stroke it before sliding the length into her mouth.

“Oh, Megan…”

She glanced up at him to see a look of utter tenderness on his face. He ran his hand over her head, cradling the back of her skull for a second. “Everything okay?” she asked.

“Yeah, it’s just…you…on your knees… Damn.”

A grin consumed her face. He’s pleased then. Her heart thumped hard in her chest. Why did it matter to her so much that he would be pleased with their interaction? Was it because she was used to taking his instruction? Or did she fear not being the kind of lover he was used to?

Maybe because it does mean so much more to me. To both of us. By the look on his face, he didn’t mind in the least. And they meant a hell of a lot more to each other than fuck buddies.

Focusing her attention on his cock, her mouth watered, and she licked her lips. Without hesitation, she grabbed the base of his shaft, and licked a path from base to tip. Ryan groaned, then stepped back from her ministrations.

Surprised and disappointed, she blinked at him.

“Later,” he said. “For now, rest your hands palms up on the back of your thighs.”

Bewildered, she did as he said.

“Good girl. Spread your thighs a bit.”

Once again, she did as he asked, and she observed a shudder ripple his tall frame. “This is position one. Try to remember that.”

“Okay.” She nodded, then took the hand he offered.

He helped her stand, then brushed his lips across hers. “This is about you right now, remember?” he murmured.

“If you insist.” She wrapped her arms around his waist, holding him tight, kissing him back with equal passion.

Ryan backed her toward the bed, then lay her down with her head on the pillows. His hands slithered up her ribcage and arms until he held her wrists in his hands. He stared into her eyes, waiting for her to agree. When she nodded in approval, he used the scarves to tie each wrist to one of the bars on the metal headboard.

“Thank you.” His sincere gratitude, calmed the frisson of panic that rose up inside. She’d never been at another’s mercy like this. Exposed in a way she’d never been before, she trembled. Ryan smiled down at her, and placed a tender kisses to her forehead, nose and lips. “Relax,” he said. “Trust me.”

Excerpt
Pink and orange hues filled the sky with a warm beauty while the sun set. Holly wrapped her arms around herself and lifted her face toward the sky to soak in the last few moments of the sun before the chill of the night descended upon them. This was definitely not going to be an easy talk to get through. She just hoped they’d both be okay when it was done.  Zander stepped up behind her, and she felt the heat of his body before he wrapped his arms around her from behind. The way she was drawn to him made her wonder if he had a magnetic pull, and it kind of scared her a little bit. Holly tried to enjoy the view as they were silent for a few moments.
“As much as I hate to let go, I think maybe we should sit so we can finally talk,” Zander said.
She hesitated a moment before taking his hand while they walked back to his house and sat beside each other on the patio. This is it.
“First, I want to clear up earlier,” Zander said. “She was just a friend, nothing more. She has only ever been a friend.”He lifted their linked hands and kissed the top of hers.
“This isn’t any of my business, but does she realize that? I got the impression there was much more than a friendship there.” Holly held her breath and didn’t exhale until after he answered her.
“Not for a really long time, and we were never a couple.” His posture slumped. “Before today, I hadn’t heard from her in months. She just showed up out of the blue, but I swear nothing happened.”
“Why are you telling me this?” Holly shifted to face him. “So you and she were friends with benefits a while ago. I have to admit I didn’t like seeing you with her, but I don’t have any right to be mad. We’re taking things slow, remember?”
“That’s just the thing. I want to be with you, Hol. As in, I’d be staking my claim. You’d be my girlfriend, exclusive.”
“I’m actually kind of glad you said that. I’ve recently figured out that I’m not made for casual.” She bit her lip nervously.“I don’t even care about your friend anymore because I sort of have some huge news, which throws going slow out the window anyway. That is, if you don’t freak out and feel like you want nothing to do with me after this.”
“Okay, now you’re making me nervous,” he joked nervously and playfully nudged her with his shoulder. “What’s up?”
“You probably should be.” Holly smiled weakly and then exhaled long and hard. “I didn’t want a relationship when you came into the picture, and I didn’t want to care for someone so much. But then there you were all sweet, caring, and persistent and screwed up my original plans. So let’s get that out there.” She smiled and leaned into him. Her head lay on his shoulder and she looked up at him needing to be close. “That’s the best part by the way because I’m glad I’ve let you in. I care for you a lot. I’ve messed up,though. We both have. Do you remember the night at my sister’s?”
“How could I forget?” His eyes lit up and she snorted.
“It was a good night, huh?” She licked her lips just thinking about it. “Well, I haven’t been feeling like myself lately,so Lauren decided to take me to get a checkup…”
“O-okay, you were sick and…?” Zander’s brows scrunched together in confusion, but as if he sensed her discomfort, he gave her a quick reprieve to pull herself together before she had to spit out the big news. He captured her mouth. His soft, plump lips caressed hers, then he moved to nip and suck on her bottom lip. His tongue coaxed her mouth open farther, and she tasted his mutual arousal as he probed the slit of her mouth with his tongue. One of her hands fisted in his shirt and held him closer, while the other massaged his nape and into his hair. They both moaned in the heat of the moment, and she could feel his chest rise and fall more rapidly before he pulled away.
“God, I’ve missed this,” he said. “You get sick again and I’m coming over with some chicken soup and taking care of you.
“That sounds amazing.” She smirked. “I’ve missed you too.” Holly shifted so that she was facing him now and rested her forehead against his while they caught their breath.
“Don’t go home yet. Call Lauren and let’s recreate that night.” He wiggled his eyebrows up and down.
“You are such a goofball. As tempting as that sounds, I need to finish what I was saying before you distract me too much.”She gave him a quick peck on the lips and leaned back.
“But the distraction is so good. I can’t help myself.” He lifted a sexy, dark eyebrow in question. “Can we fool around a bit while you talk? I’m a great multitasker.”
“I’ll tell you what, if after I tell you everything I need to, you still want to fool around or more, then yes, we’ll go inside your place and I’ll make it worth your while.” She wiggled her brows back at him and smiled as she caressed the side of his face. I just hope I don’t ruin things first.
“Deal.”
“Lauren might not be too happy if she finds out the truth.”
“Really?” He looked at her in shock. “I find that hard to believe after her and Shelby practically pushed us together.” He smiled and kissed the back of her hand. “Remind me to thank them for that one day.”
“I really hope you still feel that way after you hear what I have to say.”
“Quit stalling and just tell me already.”
“So you know I haven’t been feeling well lately, but what you don’t know is why she’s been on my case. She had some concerns that drove her to take me to the doctor in the first place.” She leaned way back in her chair and closed her eyes.
“Is she still hung up about the new apartment?”
“In a way, I guess, but right now what’s bothering her is her assumption that I might be pregnant.” She peeked in his direction to gauge his reaction.
He stiffened a bit on the seat next to her and sat straighter. “Wait, what?”

Carolyn Wren is the award winning author of the romantic suspense series, The Protectors.
Having spent her working life as a book-keeper and finance officer for international companies, she discovered a passion for fiction writing in 2009. Assuming it was some sort of mid-life crisis, she kept it a secret for six months. In an impulsive move, she entered The Emerald, a prestigious writing contest for unpublished authors run by the Romance Writers of Australia. Much to her utter shock, she won it. This was followed shortly after by a finalist placing in the unpublished division of the International Daphne Du Maurier Awards for Excellence in Mystery/Suspense.
After braving a submission letter to Secret Cravings Publishing, her debut published work Diplomat’s Daughter (Protectors Book 1) won the RWA ‘Ella’ award for novella of the year.
To date, The Protectors series has received four award nominations, resulting in two trophies.
Carolyn’s other works include a very naughty ghost erotic novella Ghosts of Grace Cottage that she wrote during a stormy winter day. Her new series, the murder mystery urban fantasy Emotional Chains is her latest writing obsession.
When not in front of the computer, you’ll find Carolyn glued to the TV. She loves classic 1960s spy dramas, and is a self-confessed sci-fi geek who owns every single Star Trek, Dr Who, and Buffy dvd ever made.
She lives in the hills of Western Australia with a husband she adores, and a varied assortment of native wildlife.

What if you could sense the emotions of everyone around you?
What if you fell in love with someone you’d never even met?
Blurb
Oliver Lord belongs to one of three special families, empaths who feel emotions as a physical sense. Quiet and reserved, and accustomed to keeping his abilities hidden, Oliver is drawn inexorably to a woman he’s never met. The woman who made his brother’s last year of life so happy.
When Zoe Daniels, talented sculptor, loses her fiancé before their wedding, she can’t imagine finding love again, until she meets Jasper’s unknown brother, a man so different, yet so achingly familiar to the man she adored. What is Oliver’s secret, and why is he so determined to keep her at arm’s length?
A violent kidnapping and murder forces the empaths from the shadows to seek justice for one of their own. Oliver turns to Zoe, needing her comfort and love. Can she accept him for who he is?
Oliver and two powerful empathic friends need to track down the kidnappers before they strike again, but how do you solve a murder, when your only clue is emotion?

Excerpts
Zoe sat with her back to the tree as she always did, knees drawn up. Thin cords dangled from her ears, attached to the smart phone at her hip. Her feet tapped out a rhythm to a tune Oliver couldn’t hear. She put down the book in her hands and tilted her head to the dappled sunlight peeking through the branches. A smile lit her face as the beams played like mischievous children on her closed eyelids. The old forest was lush and vibrant, a calm oasis of another age. Jasper had always loved spending time here, lost in the peace and quiet. No doubt he’d brought Zoe here. That she’d feel close to him in this isolated place they’d shared was understandable.
Oliver shut his eyes and reached out to read her. If he looked deep inside, he could find the essence of the brother he missed so much. He tried not to. The first time it had seemed an intrusion, but sometimes he couldn’t help himself. She was warmth and goodness. Her calm was a soothing balm to his nerves and a link to a beloved lost sibling. He indulged himself and took a tiny moment. She’ll never know.
“Why don’t you come out from behind that tree?”
Oliver’s eyes flew open at the sound of her voice. He’d not planned on being seen, and normally when he chose that option, he wasn’t. It was a simple, foolproof empathic trick, one he’d been able to do since childhood. Remaining silent and unmoving, he projected a low level of emotion in her direction. Disinterest. Indifference. Boredom. Every gentle empathic nudge was designed to increase her need to walk away and not look back.
She continued to talk as she stood. Brushing leaves from her trousers, she walked toward him with determination in her blue eyes. “If you keep lurking, it just looks suspicious.”
The moment their gazes met, he caught a flare of something. Surprise? Confusion? Oliver regained his composure. “I’m sorry if I scared you. I was enjoying the sunshine. You looked as if you were deep in thought. I didn’t want to disturb your privacy.”
“What about all the other times? Were you concerned about my privacy then, too?”
She’d noticed him before? Oliver’s much vaulted confidence of his own abilities took a distinct dive. “I’m sorry. It’s a pleasant spot, somewhere I enjoy and find calming.” Only because you’re here. “I won’t intrude on your peace any longer.”
“Do I know you?” She tilted her head to one side. The filtered sun caught the blonde strands of her short feathered haircut, making them shine.
“No.”
“Do you know who I am?”
“No.”
“May I ask you another question?”
Oliver frowned. “Of course?”
“Why are you lying to me? And who were you to Jasper?”
Excerpt 2
She sighed and leaned forward. “I’m about to tell you something. I would appreciate it if you’d listen with an open mind, because it’s going to shock you.”
Mike mirrored her position, leaning his elbows on the table. “Very little shocks me these days, Miss Baron.”
“I prefer Meredith, or Merri.”
He inclined his head in acknowledgement. “If you have information on this case, I need to hear it.”
She fiddled with the spoon from her chocolate. The first non-confident move he’d seen her make. “I think Freddy may have been killed because of abilities he had.”
“Abilities?”
“Freddy was empathic. He could feel emotions as a physical sense.”
Mike sagged, fighting a keen sense of disappointment and a growing anger. He thought they were on to something, but no. She was one of those loopy new-age nut jobs—a very beautiful new-age nut job.
“You don’t believe me.”
Mike shoved his coffee cup aside. “No, I don’t believe you, and if you’ve finished wasting my time, I have real work to do.”
“Wait,” she said as he stood.
“I’m a busy man, Miss Baron.”
“What happened in the alley?”
Mike hesitated with his palms flat on the table. “Nothing.”
“Liar. You had a panic attack.”
“Fine. I had a panic attack. I work ninety hours a week on a good week. I don’t eat or sleep properly, and I see a lot of terrible things. Sometimes the stress gets to me, okay?”
“I did it.”
“Bull dust.”
“This would be so much easier if you just believed me, but I see I’m going to have to prove it.”
“Prove what?” A rush of pure erotic heat raced through Mike’s body and headed straight between his legs. He sat down with a thud as those same limbs turned into wet noodles.
She leaned further across the table. “It’s funny, isn’t it, how we accept some emotions as a normal part of our daily life? Fear, pain, worry, anger, anxiety, guilt? We put them down as a standard occurrence caused by traffic jams, a suspicious person in our peripheral vision, a horrendous story on the evening news. You know what I mean, all sorts of things. But, sexual excitement? Desire? Lust? Arousal? Those we can’t explain away quite so easily, can we, detective?”
Her voice was a husky edged blade running over his skin. Heat. His whole body was a mass of pulsing aroused heat. Mike fought the almost uncontrollable urge to jerk his hips forward and sink into soft firm flesh. I’m having sex. Jesus, I feel like I’m having sex. All of the sensations were there. A series of highly carnal scenarios ran though his mind like a movie. Supple limbs wrapping around his, warm silky skin rubbing against him, moist lips panting with hot breath, fanning his face. His erection pressed against his zipper, and even that was unreasonably erotic. Mike was lost in a sensual storm, held captive by luminous blue eyes. The pressure built in his lower back, culminating in a blast of sensation, a tightening of his groin. Christ, I’m going to come.
Meredith broke eye contact, relaxed back in her chair, and picked up her hot chocolate.
Mikes impending orgasm, and all the associated sensations, vanished. He slumped against the table, heaving in great lungful’s of air. “Jesus Christ!”
“Nope. Just me.”
He gaped at her, his fingers curled into claws against the solid wood, and heart beating in double time. “What are you?”
The look she gave him was a mixture of exasperation and annoyance. “I’m not a what. I’m an empath. What do you say? Are you willing to listen to me now?”
“Yes,” he said, through a clenched jaw.
“Good.” She slid a gilt edged business card toward him, before standing and hitching a leather bag on her shoulder. “My place at eight tonight, address is on the card. Be prepared to listen. Oh, and Stone, drink your coffee. You look like you need it.”

tumbling

Today I welcome Devika Fernando to the gym! Just for commenting on the post, she will select TWO winners! Each will receive one of her featured books 🙂 profile picBefore we get started, we have to stretch first to prevent injury. Why don’t you share your favourite stretch with us?

Hi Kellie, thanks a lot for having me! I’m a lazy kitty most of the time, but exercise is good for the health, so I’m glad you’re coaching me. I used to do yoga, so what about stretching with the Surya Namaskar pose?

Very good! Time to let out your inner gymnast – if you could, what is the one gymnastics trick you’ve always wanted to learn?

Oh my… I was the chubby, clumsy kid at school who got the simplest things wrong in anything sports-related, so I’d basically have to answer with “all”. *lol* I think what I have the highest respect for are Olympic disciplines like artistic gymnastics on balance beam and uneven bars. I’m breaking my bones just watching those.

So, what apparatus would you like to start with? And may I remind you that playing in the foam pit is always reserved until the end of class.

Can we skip all of them? Pretty please? I need my bones intact for writing…

If you insist….  As a kid what kinds of sports did you participate in?

I had to do all sorts of gymnastics and sports during my high-school days in Germany. I hated it with a vengeance, to be honest. I do like some sports though: badminton, volleyball and hockey.

Good to have “active” interests! In gymnastics we have to keep in top physical condition. Writing is such a sedentary job. What do you do to keep in shape when you’re not typing out your next story?

In Germany, I used to go for longs walks with my husband at the weekends and sometimes play badminton in the park in the evenings. Here in Sri Lanka, it’s way too hot for that. We’ve bought an elliptical trainer, and I try to use it for some time every other day.

Right on! Let’s move onto the balance beam, shall we?

Argh, this is the stuff of nightmares… 😉 Glad I’m having you by my side.

Let’s take your mind off of how high this is and tell me when you decided to write to be published.

I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember, but becoming a writer / an author was just a dream those days. I started my own content writing business for German and international customers in 2012. Last year (2013), I finally decided to make my dream come true and write my first novel, after doing lots of research on the romance genre, the market potential and self-publishing. I published my first book – When I see your Face – this year in March.

Fantastic! Care to take a swing on the bars?

Thanks, been about ten years since I last had to do this.

There ya go! To be good at gymnastics it takes perseverance and determination not unlike that of being a writer. Tell me how you get through those times when you feel like giving up.

You’re so right! There are times when a writer thinks “I am pathetic, my writing sucks, and I’ll never be successful at all”. I guess that’s natural. What helps me most is having a supportive husband and such wonderful author friends. Interacting on social media, reading something great, and reminding myself of how far I have come usually helps to overcome such lows.

Time to test your tumbling skills. What should we start with – a cartwheel or a roll?

I’ll just hunker down and you can kick me so I’ll roll. 😉

How about we take a break instead? Tell us about your newest book release.

playing with fire cover web

I’ve just published my second book and first paranormal romance novel, “Playing with Fire”, and I’m really excited about it. It’s book one of the “4 Elements of Love” series, and I’ve started writing on book 2.

Blurb:

If you’re playing with fire, prepare to get burned – or to fall in love.

Sparks fly when Felicia and Joshua meet. Discovering her inner fire and unleashing unimaginable powers makes her realize that all her life, she has been hiding her true self. When buildings burn and people are in danger, the tempting game of playing with fire becomes serious. Will their love and desperate struggle for control save her life, or will the fire magic turn itself against its mistress?

Excerpt:

Joshua took a last step closer until there wasn’t more than an inch or two of space between them and she could feel her heat and his coldness warring with each other, testing the boundaries for a chance to leap and attack – or to leap and dance.
When he leaned his face down, Felicia’s breath hitched and her pulse started racing. Inside her belly, the flames shot higher and higher, wanting the kiss that was surely about to happen.
“Don’t,” she whispered despite the almost aching desire to feel that connection again.
Stopping a hair’s breadth before her face, he whispered back, “Why?”
His cool breath that smelled as minty and wintry as the whole man brushed over her trembling lips.
Struggling to put her conflicting feelings into words, she blurted out, “You’ll get burned.”
That purely masculine, dangerous grin tugged at his lips which were so enticingly close that she could almost taste them.
“What if I enjoy playing with fire?” he asked, voice deep and low and full of promise.

Sounds great! Gymnastics was my first passion. Then I found writing. What are your passions other than writing?

Reading, reading and reading. Oh, did I mention reading? *lol* I also love languages and animals.

Since our time in the gym is almost up – what is one thing you’d like to try before we’re done? How about in life – what is one thing you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t yet?

Hm, let’s try some rhythmic gymnastics to a great song!  But only if you promise not to laugh, because I have two left feet.

As for life: swimming in the ocean. I’m not a very good swimmer, so I stick to pools, but living in Sri Lanka has rekindled my love for the sea, and I really want to try it out one day.

Thanks for visiting the gym! All the best with your books 🙂

Thanks so much for this chance, it was fun! *limps off with a big smile on her face*
