Never a Bride

I am so happy to be here to chat with you about the latest release in the At the Shore series, NEVER A BRIDE.  I had so much fun writing this story about Emma, a wedding planner who doesn’t believe in happily-ever-after, and Carlo, her best friend and kind-of-business partner.

I have to confess that from the moment that Carlo stepped onto the page I fell in love with him.  I knew he was the perfect match for Emma. Carlo is patient, kind, hard-working, and totally sexy.

Carlo is Emma’s best friend and the caterer she depends on to help her plan perfect weddings and events for others.  Emma loves spending time with Carlo and with his large and loving Portuguese family.  You might be wondering why this hero’s name is Carlo and not Carlos and the reason is that his mom had a thing for Italian names when she decided to name Carlo and his two younger brothers, Paolo and Tomas. Speaking of younger brothers, I can’t wait to write a spin-off to the series featuring younger bad boy Paolo and Army Ranger Tomas. You’ll get to meet them as well in NEVER A BRIDE!

Emma is a tough nut about romance, but like I said before, Carlo is patient and kind. I loved Carlo’s determination, but I also loved how he came to understand Emma’s fears and proved to her that he is the kind of man who will be by her side no matter what.

I hope you will come to love Carlo as much as I did (and as much as Emma did)!

Prologue

The bouquet shot toward her head like a spaceship launched at the moon.

Emma Grant had no time to deflect the missile. She tangled her fingers into the luscious petals of the peonies, roses, and hydrangea, rousing fragrant floral scents as the bouquet grazed her face. When she was in wedding planner mode, she would have taken the time to appreciate the freshness of the blooms, but tonight she was also a bridesmaid and best friend and totally unhappy about her current predicament.

Flowers fisted in her hand, Emma whirled to face her other best friend and maid of honor, Connie Reyes, who with a subtle hip check, had knocked Emma straight into the path of the flying tussie mussie. “I thought you were my friend!”

“Totally,” Connie said with a broad smile and waltzed off to the side of the dance floor to where Carlo Gonzalez, her caterer extraordinaire and longtime man crush, stood with some of his wait staff.

Her friends thought Carlo was the man to give Emma her happily-ever-after, except it wasn’t possible that someone like Carlo could love someone like her. She was broken inside and had been for some time while Carlo was everything good in this world. A loving son and a supportive brother. A go-to-guy for her and so many others. But a lover? Even though her insides ignited at the thought of making love with the incredibly handsome Carlo, Emma knew it could only lead to misery on way too many levels.

He was her business partner of sorts and she valued how well they worked together. They had even talked about forming an event planning business more than once so Emma could have her own company and Carlo could expand his. Not to mention that he was her best friend and she couldn’t imagine not having him in her life, but she was certain that was what would happen if they tried to go from friends to lovers and it didn’t work out.

But Emma’s fears weren’t keeping Connie from trying to drag Carlo into the center of the dance floor for the next part of the wedding ritual. He protested at first and as all eyes settled on him as he balked, embarrassment engulfed her. His hesitation confirmed to Emma that changing the nature of their relationship was not necessarily something he wanted to do either.

Others soon joined in to offer Connie assistance and Carlo finally relented, although clearly reluctant. The handsome caterer stood with the other single men, and as the groom prepared his garter toss, Emma closed her eyes and mumbled a prayer beneath her breath.

“Dear Lord, please be good to me,” she said and half-opened her eyes to watch.

Apparently God wasn’t listening since the garter flew across the air, and like a horseshoe tossed at a ring, the circle of baby blue satin ribbon and beige lace landed on Carlo’s index finger, earning hoots and shouts from all gathered at the perfect catch.

Emma groaned and popped her eyes wide open as Carlo stood there, dangling the garter for all to see. A stain of color marred his cheeks as he peeked at her with a chagrined smile.

The heat of a blush erupted all across her face and up to her ears. She half glanced at Connie who had returned to stand by her and Emma said, “I will kill you for this. When you least suspect it, it will happen.”

Connie couldn’t stifle her chuckle, and when the groom’s brother and best man Jonathan Pierce strolled to her friend’s side, Connie high-fived Jonathan for his assistance with the plot. Connie murmured something to him that Emma couldn’t quite hear as the band launched into a sexy riff to continue the wedding tradition. Carlo sauntered over, garter dangling from his finger as someone placed a chair for her to sit on in the middle of the makeshift dance floor.

“The quicker you get it over with, the easier it will be,” Emma thought, hurried out, and unceremoniously plopped onto the chair. It was like taking off a bandage with a quick rip. It cut the pain much like she wanted to lessen the humiliation of Carlo being forced into this wedding tradition.

The sexy music continued as Carlo kneeled before her and mouthed “Don’t worry.” In deference to the fancy event being held at the Sinclair beachfront mansion, he was dressed in a tuxedo. The black of the tux emphasized the deep brown of his thick wavy hair. The electric white shirt was the perfect foil against olive skin that still bore the remnants of a summer tan. He smiled at her, his teeth toothpaste bright and perfect. The smile was brilliant and transformed the chiseled features of his face. Made his chocolate brown eyes gleam with a mix of amusement and awkwardness.

It was way too easy to picture him as the groom. Her groom, but that was an impossible wish. As his gaze locked with hers, she detected something different for a moment. Something dangerous that she tried to convince herself wasn’t there. There was no way that was there, she told herself.

She silently pleaded with him not to make the situation worse. Ever the gentleman, he heeded her plea and kept it clean as she looked up toward the inky night sky to avoid watching him. His touch was deferential while he slipped the lacy fabric past her shoe and ankle, but even the faintest whisper of his rough palm against her skin had her trembling inside and heat racing across her body. He moved the garter up a little higher to her calf and paused, forcing Emma to look at him to find out the reason for his delay.

Carlo grinned sexily and the fire at her core ignited into a five-alarm blaze. He was just so damn handsome and it was impossible not to imagine doing more with him. He inched the garter past her knee, his palm teasing her smooth skin, but stopped there despite the entreaties of the single men to go ever higher. He wagged his head, shook his finger in a no-way gesture, and tenderly draped Emma’s gown back over her legs.

Emma met his gaze once more, thankful, but this time it was impossible to miss that his look was filled with yearning. With that emotion, she had maybe hoped for and dreaded at the same time. And then Carlo did something totally unexpected and decidedly risky. He wrapped an arm around her waist, urged her to her feet, and slowly drew her close.

Her knees trembled and her heart pounded so loudly, she barely heard the music and cheers from those who’d maybe had a little too much to drink during the festivities. Carlo steadied her, keeping his arm around her waist as he cradled her jaw. Slowly he leaned toward her and tilted her face up with the gentlest pressure.

She could have backed away. Could have stopped him, but truthfully she didn’t want him to stop. She inched up on her tiptoes to meet his lips.

Finders Ghost Hunting #1

by Amy Romine

Genre: Paranormal Romance Thriller

When an expert Demonologist meets a Reality Show Producer on the Ghost Hunting Show Finders, sparks of true love fly so brightly even the Devil takes notice.

Demonologist, Luke Melloy has seen the face of pure evil. He’s fought it and sent it back to hell. It’s what he does. To Claire Westin, ghosts and demons are just great television and good for ratings. When faced with the truth Luke has seen, her reality is turned upside down as the two are swept into dire straits moments after they meet. Desire sparks between the unlikely pair, throwing their hearts into chaos with a love neither expected nor wanted.

When the Demon targets an unsuspecting Claire with his wrath, Luke finds his focus split between his oath to God and the awakening of his heart. Together, can they face the ancient evil and defeat it or lose everything?

Luke and Claire watched Grant, and the doctor attempt to engage Kelsey. The teenage girl sat still, her gaze fixed on Claire.

“Claire, come here,” Luke said motioning for Claire to join him on the other side of the room. “Slowly.”

Claire complied. Luke watched the girls’ eyes track Claire’s movement like a hunter tracking its prey.

“Luke,” Claire gasped, and Luke focused.

Claire’s usually clear eyes were fogged. He took her hand and discovered she was cold to the touch, as cold as when he’d pulled her out of the well.

“Just focus on me,” Luke said, squeezing her hand and knocking on the window between the rooms. A tingling sensation pulsed through Luke’s body. Consciously pushing the energy to Claire, he drank in the experience while taking deep breaths. Claire’s eyes cleared, and her hand warmed. “Better?”

She nodded. At the same moment, the door opened. Grant entered the small room, his eyes immediately focusing on their joined hands. “Is everything okay?”

“Yeah, I just got a little light-headed,” Claire said, releasing Luke’s hand.

Luke shot a look at Grant. “How did it go in there?”

“She opened her eyes, and we thought we were getting somewhere, but then we lost it. Not sure what happened.”

“We might know,” Luke said.

Claire shot him a deadly look.

Luke explained what happened in the observation room.

“Seriously?”

“Yeah.”

“There’s only one way to know for sure,” Grant said, looking at Claire.

“What?” Claire asked.

“We need to test the theory,” Luke replied.

“How?”

“By putting the stimulus back in the equation. First in the observation room, and then in the room with Kelsey,” Grant said.

“You’re not serious?” Claire replied, turning away from the men.

“Claire, if Kelsey is attracted to you for some reason, we have to investigate and see where it leads,” Grant replied.

Claire ran her hands through her hair. She stood silent for a moment before turning and meeting Luke’s eyes. She seemed to be searching for something. An acknowledgment or reassurance? He couldn’t give anything to her and looked away.

“Claire, there’s something you need to know,” Grant said.

Luke’s stomach dropped. Listening to Grant explain to Claire what had happened at the hospital when they found her in Kelsey’s room made him physically ill. He kept his focus elsewhere, not wanting to watch Claire’s reaction to the news. The incident was his fault. He should be able to protect her.

“Fine,” Claire said. “Yeah, okay, let’s see what happens.”

Luke turned, seeing the determination in her eyes.

Grant returned to Kelsey’s room and quietly informed the doctor Luke would be entering the room next, then stepped into the hallway and motioned to Luke. The two men switched places.

Luke stepped in, noting how cold the room felt compared to the hallway. “Hello, Kelsey, my name is Luke Melloy. I want to speak with you about Crestwater Church.” The girl lay motionless. “Kelsey, can you hear me? We’re here to help you, but you have to tell us what happened. We went to Crestwater. I gotta tell you, Kelsey, the church is a pretty creepy place. I would understand if you’re hesitant about sharing your experiences.” Luke took her hand. “Kelsey, you’re safe here in the hospital. Surrounded by people who are here to help you through this trauma.”

The door opened. Grant walked into the room, followed by Claire. Luke shook his head.

The doctor audibly sighed, “I want to thank you for trying. Your help is sincerely appreciated.”

“It is our pleasure,” Luke replied, watching Claire and Grant approach the bed.

Kelsey lay quietly, the shadows of her face dark and haunting despite the harsh hospital lights. Luke watched her closely while alternating his focus on Claire.

Nothing.

Silence.

Luke looked to Grant and then Claire. Claire exhaled a deep breath, the warmth of her breath mixing with a sudden iciness in the air. He switched his focus to Kelsey, whose eyes opened. The skin of her expression tightened against the bones of her face. Her eyes stared out with a menacing black glare. The room filled with the stench of death and sulfur.

“Kelsey?” Luke said. A guttural, yelping laugh of malevolent spite and rage emanated from the thin girl’s physical form. “Who are we speaking with, if not Kelsey?”

“He who is not him or her. He who will make the dripping climax of blood at your feet,” the Demon within Kelsey replied, licking its lips while looking at Claire.

An unearthly scream filled the room. Claire. Her face ashen and eyes wide in terror, she stumbled back. Grant moved to catch her, and Luke re-focused.

“God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, I appeal to your holy name, humbly begging your kindness, that you may graciously grant me help against this unclean spirit now tormenting this creature of yours, through Christ our Lord.”

“Save her, Luke. Save her as you did Daniel!” the Demon cried. The room shook, the lights flickering.

“I armor myself today with the power of the Most Holy Trinity, in the oneness of God, Creator of the universe. I armor myself today with the baptism of Christ, His crucifixion and resurrection, His ascension and glorious second coming.”

“There is no hope for her light! It is already marked with the seed of Belial!”

“I armor myself today with God’s guidance to direct me, God’s might to sustain me, God’s wisdom to instruct me, God’s word to give me speech, God’s shield to protect me, God’s army to defend me, against the snares of demons, against the lure of vices, against all who plot me harm.”

“Centum quinquaginta animas sedem formabis radicibus!” the Demon spat out with a low growl.

As quickly as the episode began, it ended. Luke checked the room. Claire stood shielded within Grant’s protective arms, while the doctor huddled in the corner of the room.

Shit.

Excerpt:

She couldn’t wait a second longer and twisted the knob to open the container.

The top didn’t budge.

She tried repeatedly until she was breathless and sweating.

The fucking thing wouldn’t turn. The nicks and dents she’d noticed earlier proved to be pry marks around the top that resembled the crown on a man’s cock.

“Crap.” She wasn’t equipped to break this thing or saw it open.

After searching her kitchen for something to use, she settled on rubber gloves to add traction to her grip. With her thighs holding the bottle, she wrenched the top as hard as her strength allowed.

The knob not only loosened, but flew off—similar to a cork on a champagne bottle—and hit her wall, denting the plaster.

There goes my security deposit.

Hold on.

By itself, the bottle trembled between her thighs, the metal growing warmer. Not an unpleasant feeling, but fucking weird.

Appalled, she flung the container on her table.

It thudded dully against her purse and shook violently.

“Shit, shit, shit!” The damn thing was going to blow. Her spicy, rich cooking must have pushed Ethyl into an earlier grave than she wanted, and this was payback. Terrified, Cari dropped to her knees, desperate to crawl to the door and outside. Frozen in horror, she hunkered behind a chair for protection.

Thunder roared.

Gold-and-black smoke poured from the bottle.

I’m going to die.

Hard rain struck the windows, but they didn’t blow out from an explosion.

Rather than the smoke rising to the ceiling, it curled in a slow spiral then drifted away from the table to her side.

Shuddering, she crab-walked away from it.

The smoke followed and took form.

Feet appeared first, at least a size fifteen, the toes well-formed and long. Muscular calves and thighs materialized next, dark hairs hugging them, the complexion olive.

She stopped edging back and leaned forward instead.

Upper thighs and narrow hips emerged, a startling-white fabric tied around the groin area, the ends hiding the good stuff. Not a loincloth exactly, more like a scarf exposing a rock-hard ass.

The abs and chest were no different, each sculpted, the small nipples a dark brown shade, similar in color to refried beans. The pecs quivered on each new breath. However, there was no navel.

This can’t be happening.

She raised her face.

The smoke broke apart, floated to the ceiling, and disappeared.

Leaving a thirtysomething man standing before her.

He opened his lushly lashed eyes.

Her breath caught. His irises were closer to gold than hazel, his shoulder-length brown hair thick and wavy, stubble outrageously sexy, mouth sensuous, one dark eyebrow arched at her.

He planted his hands on his lean hips.

Holy fuck. A gladiator couldn’t have owned more muscles, though they weren’t overdone like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s, but totally male.

Her pussy creamed.

An odd reaction since this couldn’t be real.

When the knob flew off the bottle, it must have ricocheted off the wall and hit her head, causing her to hallucinate this, or rather, him.

Only one way to find out. She grabbed his calf. Its brawn and heat made her ears buzz.

Grinning lewdly, he flexed his muscles and pressed into her touch.

This was no dream. She snatched back her hand. “Who-who-who-who—” She shivered so badly, she couldn’t speak, but had to. “Who are you? What are you?”

His eyebrows shot up to his hairline. He lifted his chin. “You, a mere woman, dare to question or demand anything from me?”

“Huh?” Not liking his sexist attitude, she scrambled to her feet. At five-seven, she couldn’t match his height. By her guestimate, he topped out at six-four and was the most perfect man she’d ever seen, except for his patronizing gaze. Precisely what she didn’t need. “Again, who or what are you? This is my place. My kitchen. Not yours. Answer me.”

“I answer only to my master. Go on.” He gestured her away as Antonini had. “Fetch the man in charge.”

As if. Before she could slug him, he pivoted and regarded her kitchen warily, as a one-percenter would, seeing only how small and simple it was.

She couldn’t have cared less if he found her digs lacking.

He next focused on her buñuelos.

If he gave them a pissy look or said one unkind thing about her cooking, he wasn’t long for this world, even if she didn’t know how to off him.

Bent at the waist, he sniffed the treats and licked his lips.

Growling sounded.

His stomach?

Holding one buñuelo between his thumb and forefinger, he examined the fried dough carefully, licked the contours, then popped the treat into his mouth. As he chewed, his lids slid down and he moaned the way guys do during orgasms.

Excerpt:

The door clicked then swung inward, steam drifting out.

Unaware of his presence, Toni looked behind herself at something in the bath. Her skin glowed from her shower and smelled of soap rather than her cologne. Her stretchy blue camisole and plaid boxer shorts clung to her damp flesh.

Zach’s heart beat violently. The tee slipped from his hand.

He told himself to pick it up and race downstairs before she saw him.

His legs refused to move.

Moisture dripped from her freshly washed hair and rolled down her temple to her cheek. Her thin satin strap fell over her shoulder.

Ignoring it, she lifted a brush to her hair, turned, and froze. Her gaze slipped down his naked chest, paused at his fly, and settled on his erection. Desire quickly replaced her surprise. Her lips parted. A gentle breath spilled out. She looked at him, her gaze receptive and yearning.

He slipped his hand behind her neck and pushed her into the door.

The wood smacked the doorstop and vibrated, matching the sounds from his sprinting heart.

Toni dropped her brush. It tapped across the linoleum.

Her skin was so ungodly hot, Zach thought he might die. He captured her mouth and drove his tongue inside, filling her as much as he could, his kiss savage, uncivilized, and punishing for making him wait…for making him want.

She suckled him deeper, her mouth tasting of peppermint toothpaste and female lust. She ran her palms up his pecs, wreathed her arms over his shoulders, and dug her nails into his back, imprisoning him with one leg wrapped around his.

Roused beyond control, he ground his stiffened cock into her mound and angled his mouth for greater penetration.

They made sloppy, lewd, joyous sounds, telling each other and the world they were alive, they deserved this, kissing brazenly for what might have been minutes. When the initial fury ebbed, their passion turned tender and exploring, stoking his desire even more.

Toni melted into him, her chest pumping with her strangled breaths.

Obsessive need sliced through him. He tore his mouth free, heaved air, and stepped back, forcing her leg from around his.

Wearing a disapproving look, she glanced at the space separating them then him pulling her arms from his shoulders.

She slumped. “What are you doing?”

“Shh.” He imprisoned her wrists in one hand, lifted her arms above her head, and held them to the door. The wood shimmied again. On a rough breath, he pushed her camisole up, exposing her right breast.

A faint sound rose from her throat, sounding like pure pleasure.

His legs went rubbery. Dizziness hit so hard he had to lower his head to stop it. Her nipple was a paler pink than he would have guessed, tight and puckered, waiting for his mouth.

He made his first lick unhurried, his tongue skimming the hard bud. His next was hungered, his laps exploring the bumpy areola and the creamy skin beyond it.

Air whooshed from her. She sagged against the door.

He tightened his hold on her wrists and cupped her breast, loving its weight and warmth, then drew her nipple into his mouth, sucked hard, soft, then hard again, incapable of settling on either. He wanted to fuck her raw on the bathroom floor, take her to the guest bedroom, tie her to the bed, and do things with her he’d done with no other woman.

Finished with her nipple, he slanted his mouth over hers, accepting her tongue and pulling it deep. He slid his hand over her boxer shorts and cradled her mound. God, God, God. His ears rang from too much desire. Perspiration broke out on his chest.

Toni moaned indecently, encouraging him to do more.

He dipped beneath the thin cotton fabric and touched her damp curls.

She spread her legs.

Good girl. As far as he was concerned, they could spend the entire day here.

Two hearts tumbling together through love and life.

Anna Fortier’s heart tumbles head over heels for the head coach in her gym. His gruff demeanor toward her suggests he couldn’t care to give her the time of day. Determined to get over her crush, she devises a plan to tell him how she feels, and free herself once and for all.

Taras Volkov moved to Canada from the Ukraine to further his education and career. He didn’t factor into his plan falling for Anna—a coach under his command at the gym.

When Anna makes her feelings for him known, he chooses to reveal his secret desire for her. As they explore their new personal relationship, they are faced with one crisis after another. Will their hearts tumble together, or will their romance fall short?

EXCERPT:

“I’ve had it bad for you since the day we met, too,” she admitted. “I teased you and flirted, but you never noticed.”

Butt wriggling, she shifted in his lap and laughed. “You always seemed angry with me.”

“Oh, I noticed.” He shifted her closer to his hard cock.

One fingertip drew a line over her cheekbone. “I am sorry if my coldness hurt you.”

“But this isn’t wrong, right?” She snuggled closer to him, burying her head under his chin.

The hope in her voice stirred the lust in his loins. “I suppose not.” His fingertips drew circles up her leg to the side of her knee under her skirt. “We have much to talk about. Is this something you want?”

 “Yes.”

Her body trembled, breathing quickening, as he continued tracing flower patterns on the outside of her thigh. He needed to take this relationship slow and make sure Anna communicated with him every step of the way.

She never broke eye contact with him, and he liked her bold stare. He moved his hand higher up her thigh until he caressed the side of her butt. Her pupils flared, and her breath caught, but she made no move to stop him.

Splaying his fingers over the flesh of her ass, one eyebrow rose when the edge of her barely-there underwear tickled his pinkie finger. The heat of her centre radiated toward his hand, beckoning him to dip inside her well and sample the waters.

Taras froze, heart pounding, lust racing through his veins. They played a dangerous game, and it wouldn’t take much to convince her to do a lot more than they were doing now. He wanted her bad. His cock ached for her, but he was too much of a gentleman to take advantage of her affections or state of arousal. The need to protect her would always be strong.

He leaned in and nipped her bottom lip. He would show her what it was like to be with a man. No way would he do anything to hurt her or make her run from him. He’d make sure she stayed in his arms for a long time. “Anna—you must promise me something.”

Breathless, she asked, “What’s that?”

Release Day! The Perfect Score

This book was previously published. It has been re-edited, re-formatted, and re-released. Thank you to eXtasy Books for giving this series a home and breathing new life into a great story. When I first wrote them, I was at a very different place in my life. Having the chance to re-write the characters and showcase my growth as an author has been an honor. This book in particular hits the heart in some deep places. I hope readers will love their story, and laugh and cry along with Shelley and Jack. Available now from eXtasy Books!

What will they risk to achieve the perfect score?

Fun-loving and free-spirited Shelley Longstaff summons her iron will to stand up to Jacques Fortier when he demands she accept his daughter into the gymnastics program, or he will sue.

Jacques Fortier is at his wits end with his daughter for her unsportsmanlike behavior. In his frustration, he threatens to sue Shelley and the club for discrimination if they don’t accept her for training.

As Shelley and Jack discuss terms of Anna’s acceptance into training, Shelley discovers a tragedy that is causing a rift between father and daughter. When Jack asks for a favor, Shelley finds herself hard pressed to refuse.

When a crisis of teenage proportions threatens their relationship, will they retreat, or risk everything for the chance to achieve The Perfect Score?

EXCERPT:

“If I find out you’re lying about your program being full, I’ll sue both you and this club.”

“You wouldn’t dare.” Shelley Longstaff stared at the giant of a man bracing himself on the front edge of her desk. She rose from her chair, neck cramping in order to maintain eye contact. Good God, he’s tall. Drawing herself up to her full height—all five feet four inches—she prepared for battle.

Cocking his head to the side, he gave Shelley a silky smile. “Try me.”

Shelley’s eyes narrowed at his arrogant attitude. The threat of a lawsuit didn’t bode well for her future as head coach of the club. How had she ended up in this impossible position? This is all Claire’s fault. She recommended me for head coach. She thought I could do it. A small voice laughed inside her head. You wanted this job, chickie. And you’re damn good at it. Don’t let Mr. Jolly Green intimidate you. You have the upper hand.

To calm the butterflies battering her insides, she drew in a deep breath which brought the scent of his cologne to her nostrils. A queer feeling shot through her stomach. Damn! What is that? She took a moment to study him. The suit he wore screamed money. Close-cropped black hair, peppered gray at the sides, the square angle of his jaw, perfect nose, and nearly black eyes surrounded by thick dark lashes, made the breath clog in her chest. Handsome for an older dude.

Her knuckles whitened as she gripped the desk, fighting the hormonal surge in her body. Shelley pursed her lips together and blinked. He threatened to sue me, remember?

His gaze pierced hers. Sexy or evil? Sexy with a hint of ‘I don’t take no for an answer.’ Without breaking eye contact, she returned the stare, not one to back down from a challenge.

Jacques Fortier spoke through clenched teeth. “One more time—is your program full?”

Yes. She practiced the lie in her head, but the deepness of his voice washed over her like a wave drowning a surfer. What is wrong with me? Concentrate!

When she didn’t respond immediately, he went on. “You can’t refuse my daughter the right to train here. This club is run by a board of directors. It’s not a private facility.” He paused, no doubt for effect, but his voice held a note of defeat when he spoke again. “Besides, this club is our last resort.”

Damn. He had a point. Four points actually, and with his last statement, she felt a little sorry for him.

This would be Anna Fortier’s fourth club in two years. Shelley had long ago been convinced it wasn’t the clubs—it was the girl. Shelley folded her arms over her chest. “Seems to me that if our club is your last resort—you’d be a little kinder in your demand.”

He hung his head in defeat. Maybe it would finally sink in that his daughter wasn’t elite material. Anna took more time than allowed during warm-ups at competition, she had no sense of sportsmanship, rarely smiled, and gossip about her poor training habits had spread far and wide. Shelley didn’t want to ruin the positive gym atmosphere here by admitting Anna.

She lifted her chin. “I’m sorry Mr. Fortier, we are not admitting gymnasts of Anna’s caliber at this time,” she restated. “And the club has the right to turn away potential gymnasts if the program the gymnast is seeking to enter is full.”

Please accept my half-truth and walk away. Her group only had six gymnasts in it. Technically she could accept Anna into the program—she just didn’t want to. Crap. She’d always been a lousy poker player. Would he believe her or call her bluff?

EXCERPT #2:

He rewarded her statement with an eye roll. “Anna always accuses me of not listening.” Relaxing back in his chair, he pulled up the sleeves of his sweater, revealing his lean, muscled forearms.

Based on the sight, she wondered what the rest of his body looked like. She gave herself a mental head shake. This wasn’t a date. It was a business meeting, and she had no business thinking those things.

Shelley put her hands up in a gesture of surrender. “Whether or not you listen isn’t my business. It’s her perception that you don’t. From personal experience, you certainly don’t take no for an answer. Threatening to sue me is a case in point.”

He dismissed the idea with a wave of his hand. “I wouldn’t have gone through with it. You caught me off-guard when you didn’t jump at the chance to train my daughter. Knee-jerk reaction.”

“You had me fooled.” She rested her forearms on the table. “Since Anna has assured me what she told me in confidence today is something you’re already aware of, I see no reason to bore you with the details. I’d like a chance to work with her without having to run to you and report every detail.”

He picked up his water glass, and took a long sip, considering her request. “You’ve agreed to train her?”

She nodded. “Yes. I think she and I have come to an agreement.”

“All right,” he conceded. “I’ll respect the request for now.”

Sitting across the table from him didn’t feel as awkward as she thought it would. She figured now would be as good a time as any to broach the subject of his deceased wife. “Tell me about Anna’s mother. I understand she’s—”

“—dead.”

Shocked at the brusque manner in which he’d delivered the news, she stammered to find a reply. “I-I’m sorry.”

He studied the table top rather than looking at her. “I gather you didn’t know.”

The Hunt by Jo Tannah

About the Author:
I grew up listening to folk tales my father and nannies told either to entertain us children or to send home a message. These narratives I kept with me and finally, I wrote them down in a journal way back when I kept one. Going through junk led to a long forgotten box and in it was the journal. Reading over the stories of romance, science fiction and horror I had taken time to put to paper, brought to light that these were tales I never met in my readings.
The tales I write are fictional but all of them are based on what I grew up with and still dream about. That they have an M/M twist is simply for my pleasure. And I hope, yours as well.

Their task is to find the ring the Prelate’s son wore. The promised compensation and bonus offered are enough to make this their team’s final mission.
What they meet in the forest is something none of them have ever encountered before. Marcus now faces the unimaginable. He realizes too late that sometimes, running away may be the only option left to stay alive.
Note: This work has been previously published but has been reworked, re-edited, and expanded.
Excerpt 1:
Marcus gave a signal, and again Bruga led the way. They had only gone a few meters when Bruga stopped once more and looked down. He pointed to a piece of bloodied material next to a broken knife. Next to it was a boot. Marcus moved closer and looked down. He gritted his teeth and looked up to meet Bruga’s gaze.
“What is it?” Franco stepped up beside Marcus. He pulled out an evidence bag from one of his pockets.
“See for yourself,” Marcus said with a grimace. He stepped back and began inspecting the ground around them.
“Ah, fuck,” Franco said, picking up the boot. Marcus didn’t have to look his direction to see what Franco held in his hand. The image had been burned into his brain. The boot still had a severed foot inside it, cut off at what appeared to be the ankle of the unfortunate owner.
Excerpt 2:
“No, sleep isn’t what I had in mind,” Marcus said. He took Malik’s face between his hands and looked deeply into his dark chocolate eyes. Behind the impish grin, he saw the flicker of anticipation. He smiled at the young man’s cheek. How dare Malik? Had he no respect for Marcus’ rank and position? “I do promise to make the wait as enjoyable as I can, Malik.”
Malik’s expression turned sober. “Oh, I hope you will, Marcus. Or else, I will have to suspect that your reputation is purely made up or some exaggerated rumor.”

Marcus laughed with delight at Malik’s wit. “I think you’ll have the opportunity to decide for yourself. Now, come to bed.”

Snatching Dianna by Seelie Kay

Please join us for an interview with author Seelie Kay and hear about her newest book!

Why do you write romance?

Because I am fascinated by the games people play to find and secure a lasting relationship, which is not always love. There’s the chase, the courtship, the falling, the surrender. That’s what I try to capture in my stories.

Do you prefer a certain type of romantic hero?

I adore smart, dashing gentlemen who aren’t afraid to live on the edge. They can be a bad boy, a billionaire, a prince, or a secret agent. That hint of danger just hooks me!

Why did you write “Snatching Dianna?”

Actually, for two reasons.  First, when writing the Kinky Briefs series, there were certain couples I fell in love with:  The Sheikh and his American lawyer wife who sue terrorists on behalf of their victims, the police chief (with a preference for handcuffs) and his criminal defense attorney wife who seek to right wrongs, and the covert agent and his law professor wife, who are smart, funny, and incredibly hot! Each of these couples have wonderful relationships and incredible lives. And each and every one of them is dedicated to preserving justice. I wanted their stories to continue. So, I created the Feisty Lawyers series. Second, “Snatching Dianna” deals with a law student who is kidnapped by a slave trafficking cartel. This plot permitted me to focus not only on the continuing problem of slave trafficking, but also on the investigative issues behind finding a missing adult. In this story, there is no evidence and no witnesses. It’s takes a lot of investigative savvy to piece together seemingly unrelated clues. I love complex puzzles and this story lets me go wild!

Why slave trafficking? That seems like such an uncomfortable subject.

My book ends with this statement:  Experts say that more than 3,000 people around the world are sold, kidnapped, or forced into slavery each day, many of them children. Even in the United States, men, woman, and children are snatched off the streets for the purpose of human slavery. Slave traffickers do not discriminate by race, gender, religion, education, or socio-economic status. Victims of slave trafficking come from all walks of life, as do those who traffic in humans. It is a crime of international proportions and one that requires committed international cooperation.

As a lawyer and a human being, I think it is a topic worth calling attention to.

This book includes three very different couples. Wasn’t it a little hard to keep track?

(laughs) At times. However, each couple is at a different stage in their lives and each took a different journey to find one another. That helps to keep them separate.

Romantic suspense is a new genre for you. You’re most known for your Kinky Briefs series, which are collections of stories about lawyers in love, with a dash of kink. Why the shift from erotic romance?

I have always had a preference for mysteries and thrillers. I enjoy plots that challenge the mind. Plus, I am a big James Bond fan. My characters still enjoy erotic, loving relationships, but now the action focuses on solving a dilemma or crime. Instead of “metaphorical guns,” these  characters wield real ones. (Wink!)

How does your former profession as a lawyer impact your writing?

After 30 years, the law and the legal world are so firmly embedded in my brain that I can’t flush them out. That has become the lens through which I view the world and that naturally guides my characters and plots. Little peculiarities that I have witnessed in lawyers and the law always work their way into my stories.

Any plans to write outside the romance genre completely?

Actually, I ghostwrite non-fiction for other professionals—doctors, lawyers, financial gurus—so I dip my toes into a lot of different genres. However, I have been itching to write a book about a relative who founded a religious cult. I researched it for years and found a lot of information that had been buried. I have a pile of paper a foot high. Someday, I need to go through it carefully and start writing. I have the interest, just not the time.

The cover of the book clearly says “Snatching Dianna” is part one in the Feisty Lawyers Series. How many more books can we look forward to?

At this point, I’m not sure. In each book, I introduce new characters with compelling stories, so it is difficult to predict how and when their stories will be brought to a satisfactory conclusion.  However, the second book, “Infamy,” is in the queue, and I have a good start on the third, “Cult.” There should be at least one more after that.

Blurb for “Snatching Dianna”

The hours are counting down as investigators try to prove that Dianna Murphy has been snatched. Unfortunately, without witnesses and solid evidence, all the police really know is that she is missing.

When suburban Milwaukee law student Dianna Murphy fails to connect with her roommate, there is no real evidence that she has been snatched. Until Law Professor Janet MacLachlan, a former covert agent, discovers a single clue, one that points to a taking by a slave trafficking cartel. In a race against time, Janet recruits her husband, secret agent Cade Matthews, small-town Police Chief David Manders and his wife, criminal defense attorney Julianna Constant, and other law students to uncover the truth. Can they prove she has been taken, before Dianna disappears without a trace?

Romantic Suspense (Three Flames)

Excerpt:

After what seemed like hours in the sweltering van, it lurched to a stop.

Dianna heard a man bark orders. A door to the van opened and someone pulled the rope from her feet, then removed her hood. She took a deep breath.  A man grabbed her by the arm, forced to her feet, and pulled from the van. Dianna stumbled when she hit the ground. The stones were hot and her feet were covered by athletic socks, no shoes. Show no weakness.

Dianna immediately surveyed her surroundings. It was still night, but she was in a well-lit courtyard. A large stone mansion stood in front of her. She looked to her right, then her left. The courtyard was enclosed by a large stone fence, at least eight feet high. A fortress. Fortunately, Dianna was a rock-climber. She could rappel over the fence with the right equipment. All she would need was something to serve as a pick, maybe a rope. A knife, a screwdriver, even a fork. Keep your eyes and ears open. Be ready.

A large black man, dressed in a white suit and a maroon turban, walked out of the front door and down the stairs. He stopped and flashed a malevolent smile. He flung his arms wide and in a cultured baritone boomed, “Welcome to paradise, ladies. I hope you enjoy your stay.”

Some of the guards laughed.

“Crikey,” Tillie muttered. “Sounds like a blasted genie.”

Dianna glanced sideways and for the first time, got a look at her new friend. She was tall and thin, her body well defined. She looked strong and aware, almost fierce. Her eyes seemed to be studying the place, taking everything in. She showed no fear. Instead, she seemed interested. Something was off. Tillie did not act like a victim as the others did. She was not cowed. Was she a cop? Or like Dianna, someone who would not permit themselves to be broken?

There was only one thing of which Dianna was certain. She had found a friend. A useful one.
